5 Ideas for exploring the world without breaking the bank

7 August 2020

For young people, traveling and discovering other cultures are important formative experience in their personal development. We sometimes have the feeling, however, that reduced budgets can limit our options to go and see what’s behind the corner. Well, do not despair, here are five ways to do so at everyone’s reach.

Just to name a few, youth exchanges, volunteering, and traveling by bike allow us to explore new people and lands, to become part of distant communities, and learn about ourselves and the world. The advantage of this type of experiences? They require a lot of goodwill and not heaps of money!

Here are five ways to live incredible experiences, accessible to anyone:

1.European Solidarity Corps

A platform where young people aged 18-30 can apply for volunteering (as well as internship) opportunities in another country. Everything is financed by the European Commission. A great way to discover a new culture while committing to working in a local community.

2. Discover EU

If you are 18 years old and want to discover Europe, you are in the right place! This project allows you to travel –alone or in a group-  across Europe with transport paid for by the European Commission. An interesting initiative which aims to make Europe’s natural and cultural heritage available to everyone.

3.Pedal through Europe on one of the many cycle routes

From Italy to Scandinavia and from Spain to Turkey, there are tons of options to explore Europe on a bike, following the excellent paths for cyclo tourists. We already praised this type of traveling in another article, so here we’ll just advise you to consult this interactive map of some of the most inspiring routes for your next adventures.

4. World Wide Opportunities on OrganicFarms (WWOOF)

You’ve probably already heard of « Woofing », i.e. volunteering on organic farms in exchange for accommodation and food.  A nice option to work with your hands, learn about sustainable agriculture while enjoying nature.

5. For the sea-lovers out there: Find a Crew!

The Sea has the power to inspire and make us day-dream. Being able to cross it and live a true sailor’s life is not a far-fetched option but a reality open to everyone ! On this platform skippers are regularly looking for crew members for their boats. Find your boat and start the adventure!

So, hopefully, these little tips will help you to make the most of what is out there.
