Of the last report from the HCC and our green habits

Last week’s report from the Haut Conseil pour le Climat (HCC) has evaluated France’s environmental efforts as not enough to face the climate crisis. To share what happens at the national level is important, but what counts is to also keep faithful. Every action counts! This made us keen to share with you our daily green habits…read until the end to know Maewan’s team green habits!

2019 has been the hottest year ever recorded in Europe. The report observes improvement in state governance, notably on increased transparency on state actions’environmental impact. Unfortunately, a 0.9% decrease in CO2 emissions is far from the objective for 2025 which is about reducing emissions by 3%. As in previous years, transport, agriculture, building, and industry are the most polluting sectors.

One takeaway from the report is that France should firstly focus on not causing more harm, and then works towards a no-carbon transition. So, it is important to not support the most harmful economic sectors for the environment during the post-COVID recovery efforts.

Reading all this, we can feel lost, hopeless, with little means to influence what happens « far away » and « above » us. Yet, we refuse to let ourselves be submerged by this little reassuring news. Collective action to pressure states and polluting industries are as important as our daily green habits. And keeping green habits makes us feel good too!

There are a lot of green habits we can adopt in our lifestyle, some require a lot of effort, others are compatible with compromises. What counts to us, is what everyone can do at their level and so be part of collective solutions. So, we have asked Maewan’s team what their daily green habits are :

      Tiphaine “Titi”, Event Manager: I try to buy local and I always give away things I do not need anymore and that can still be useful to someone. 

      Janet, Office Administrator: In light of my future move to Burkina Faso, I am reflecting on how to adapt my green habits in France to reduce my environmental impact there. I also think about the construction of my future home: what local materials to use for isolation, so to not have to recur to air conditioning. 

      Jonathan “Jonny”, Digital Communication Manager: Since five years I have considerably reduced my meat intake. Having grown up in cities, I have changed my lifestyle to spend more time in nature, which I think is indispensable to develop environmental awareness and fully commit to daily green habits. 

        Erwan “Wawan”, Expedition leader: I try to repair, reuse things to not litter, and buy again. I prefer durable and sturdy products rather than instant and fragile consumption.

       Marion, President: At home, I am in charge of groceries…I do not really have a choice as Erwan refuses to enter into shops. I have eliminated all packaging and replaced them with cotton bags and glass containers. I buy my milk at the farm and Erwan transforms it into yogurts!
