5 takeaways on Methane

21 July 2020

According to a recent article, methane emissions have increased since the industrial to the point of reaching global warming of 4.3° by 2100. But what do we actually know about this powerful fossil fuel that scientists also call « climate bomb »? Here are 5 key points to better understand what is at stake:

I. Its warming effect is 28 times more powerful per kilogram than CO2 on a 100-year horizon

II. Its concentration in the atmosphere has more than doubled since the Industrial Age

III. 30% of methane gases stem from agriculture and livestock farming (digestive fermentation and manures)

IV. Europe is the only region in the world where methane emissions have decreased, probably due to improved waste management and agricultural practices

V. Considerable amounts of methane are trapped underneath the constantly frozen soil (permafrost) found mostly in the Northern Hemisphere. Global warming could cause a positive feedback mechanism whereby increased temperatures lead to more thawing, which in turn would release more methane emissions.

Voilà, we hope this article has given you an overview of how methane, less known than his cousin CO2, contributes to the climate crisis. We are convinced that if everyone plays their part we can build a more sustainable and just future for the next generations. Here at Maewan, we will continue to explore, share, and raise awareness about the fragility of the ecosystems that host us throughout our expeditions. We will continue to stand side-by-side with youth, supporting them to become catalysers of collective change in their local communities
